Day 56: Chillagoe to Mount Molloy

Well it was into the Donna Cave this morning to check out some Stalagmites and Stalactites. The local Ranger is your guide through this cave and gave us the run down on how the limestone formations are created over time. The stalactites grow down 3-5cm in a 100 years and the stalagmites grow up 1cm in a 100 years.

Richie was more fascinated by the bats and kept telling the ranger every time he saw one. Only micro bats in this cave - managed to snap this shot.

We then kicked on to the old smelter which processed copper and other metals many years ago. I was keen to read all about it from the display boards, but the kids were not greatly entertained by this one.

Then it was back out to Mareeba before turning northward to Mount Molloy where there was a really nice little free camp beside the river.

  1. Glad you went to chilligoe. I found it really different, very interesting, & loved the caves. Stalactites hang on tight, stalagmites, might get up there. easy way to remember which is which. Free camps seem to be getting harder to find, great when you get one in a nice place, that really going bush. Having chainsaw issues today. back for another go now. take care, and are you having too much fun Bridgie
