Day 49: Charters Towers

Today was a no travel day where we just went into town and checked out the local attractions. The town is actually very nice and still has a strong historical resemblance to the gold rush days after it was first discovered here in 1871.
As we always do, the first stop was the vistors centre and then a short walk down the main street to a little place called the Miner's Cottage. It was a small cottage filled with lots of things from the the past but the thing the kids were most interested in was learning how to pan for gold. They were certainly very happy to find some.

Next we went to the lookout over the city on Tower Hill. It used to be ammunition dump during the second world war for the RAAF. There's 29 bunkers on the hill.

After a relaxing swim in the afternoon we had a fun night where we went to the drive in to see 'Red Dog'. We took hot dogs and popcorn and sat in deck chairs and the kids lied on the bonnet up against the windscreen. First time to the drive for the kids and a long long time since Penny and I had been. Top film - Penny cried 5 times, but not me - that was rain drops.
