Day 25: Alice Springs to Gemtree

We got hit with a thumping of thunder storms that rattled the van and an inch of rain at Alice last night. I thought it was supposed to be a desert out there.

Anyway, it was then off to Gemtree which is a caravan park about 150km's north of Alice Springs. We set up camp and then shot out for some fossicking for Gems. We went to a spot particularly known for Garnets (there is also a spot for Zircons). You have to sieve piles of dirt through sieves and then wash the remaining stone through. We were however very nervous as there was a huge plume of smoke nearby. The wind as blowing from behind us, but the long grass was tinder dry. We did manage to find a number of small pieces.

  1. You love living on the edge, get outta there and get to the diamond mines!! Samples accepted - big samples! Fires are going to be popular this summer. We have had the map of australia out tonight and stuck blue tac on your camping spots, we cant believe how far you travelled already. Love the photos. Jacob was reading the explore outback australia book and we got inspired to see where you are now and where you have been.
Back to the study tonight. Andrew is at a camp meeting, he and Corey off to New Zealand in 2 weeks. The house should be officially sold and have the sold sticker on it tomorrow, so there will be a few quiet bevies sunk I am sure. Out to the farm to catch up with the builder tomorrow, moving along quite quickly at the moment. Kitchen design tomorrow and knocking down a brick wall, the wall is my preferred job!
Hey have you seen any snakes yet? we had one at the bottom of the track down to the old house, wriggled into the wood pile, bit too close to the house for my comfort! That was quite a lizard in your pics, looked like a big snake. The different types of wallabies have been interesting, how do you know what is what??
Chloe was elected Junior School Captain for next year and is quite excited about it. She is however the only girl, the other 3 captains are boys, told her not to worry she's like one of the boys most of the time, just fitting really! First time it has ever happend, has always been 2boys and 2 girls.
Kids have been a bit tired and grumpy so off to bed early tonight to hopefully get a good nights sleep and wake up refreshed! Hope you are all sleeping well in your van.
Hope you stocked up on steak too at the worlds largest cattle station - would love to own that baby, how awesome (next TV show - keeping up with the ox's).
Travel safe, love reading the blog. Big hi to the kids, cuddles, kisses and high fives. I dont think Ive seen a blog from Bridget yet - or did I miss it?
