It was going to be a long drive today - out the 70km's from Trephina Gorge to the Stuart Highway, back down the 200 kms to Erldunda and then 244 kms west on the Lasseter Highway to Yulara. Plenty of smoke on the way down fromn a fire in the Simpson Dessert that was now being blown in our direction. We saw plenty of wedge tailed eagles who seemed to be hunting in the smokiest areas (perhaps looking for escaping prey.
On the Lasseter Highway on the way in to Yulara Felicity spotted a herd of wild camels, which was great as we hadn't seen that before. As we found out they shouldn't have been that hard to find, as there is estimated to be over a million wild camels in Australia - the world's largest wild population. It's a worry when we haven't seen a Big Red kangaroo out this way yet.
Then we finally arrived at Ayers Rock. By the time we set up camp the sun was setting so we walked up the dunes at the back of camp and watched the big red rock change colours as the light died. A nice finish to a long day's drive.
Hi guys, Leroy and I are really enjoying the blog. I really love the animal pictures, I hope you get a picture of a thorny devil if you see one, that would be awesome. I bet there wont be a picture of Richard on top of Uluru, dad says that he wont be allowed to climb it. Not because of his heart, but because North Melbourne will never be on top of anything in this lifetime..haha.. I think Dad is still grumpy after the grand final. Those camels looked pretty big, were they scary? It looks like its hot too. I bet the boat hasnt been wet yet, too bad Lake Eyre was muddy. Bye

Richie actually found a thorny devil when playing with some kids at the Yulara caravan park. No photo though - sorry.
